Synopsis:
On the eve of its fifth decade, the Israeli occupation in the Palestinian territories can no longer be considered a temporary aberration. Israel's control over Palestinian life, society, space and land has become firmly entrenched while acquiring more sophisticated and enduring forms.
The Power of Inclusive Exclusion analyzes the Israeli occupation as a rationalized system of political rule. With essays by leading Palestinian and Israeli scholars, a comprehensive chronology, photographs, and original documents, this groundbreaking book calls into question prevalent views of the occupation as a skewed form of brutal colonization, a type of Jewish apartheid, or an inevitable response to terrorism. The writers address the fundamental and contemporary dimensions of the occupation regime—its unpredictable bureaucratic apparatus, the fragmentation of space and regulation of movement, the intricate tapestry of law and regulations, the discriminatory control over economic flows and the calculated use of military violence.

A talk by Miriam Margolyes - 4pm Sunday 18th October 2009 at the Cambridge Union Society's Debating Chamber.

(9a Bridge Street) Co-hosted by the CU Palestine Society and the Cambridge Union Society.

A veteran of stage and screen, award-winning actress Miriam Margolyes has achieved success on both sides of the Atlantic. Major film credits during her long and celebrated career include Yentl, Little Shop of Horrors, I Love You To Death, End of Days, Sunshine, Cold Comfort Farm, Cats & Dogs, Magnolia & was Professor Sprout in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Most memorable TV credits include, Old Flames, Freud, Life and Loves of a She Devil, Blackadder, The Girls of Slender Means, Oliver Twist, The History Man, Vanity Fair, Supply & Demand. She was Franny in the CBS sitcom, Frannie's Turn & starred recently in the Miss Marple episode, Murder at the Vicarage.

Recently, Margolyes appeared in Caryl Churchill's controversial play "Seven Jewish Children" about the history of Israel.

She will soon be appearing in Endgame at the Duchess Theatre, in the TV Comedy Coming of Age and in the very last Harry Potter film.

"Debate: One State Solution vs. Two State Solution in Palestine / Israel"

The debate about the solution for the Palestine question has been going for a long time. But in light of the current deadlock in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the debate on the appropriate solution for the Palestinian problem has become more and more relevant in Palestinian society. The split in the Palestinian political arena (between Fatah and Hamas) reflects this debate clearly. Our speakers will present their viewpoints on why they think one alternative is better than the other, they will have the chance to respond to each other, and of course at the end we will open the floor for questions from the audience.
